Pearl River, NY -- (7/18/16) Tom DePrisco, candidate for the 38th Senate District in New York, today called for amendments to the present New York State Department of Education regulations regarding fire inspections.
Additionally, public school regulations state that students and employees may not occupy buildings without a valid Certificate of Occupancy. This is not stated in the non-public school regulations. According to published reports, the school at 720 Union Road has been open for three years without a Certificate of Occupancy.
To ensure uniform safety standards, I strongly recommend amending the present Education Department regulations thus mandating that all public and non-public schools be held to the same Fire Inspector qualification requirements. Considering the length of time that the Mesivta Ahavas Hatorah has been operating as a school, I would have expected the NYS Education Department to properly monitor compliance with the fire safety inspection regulations since the school clearly did not."
Tom DePrisco is a resident of Pearl River. He serves as the Vice President of the Pearl River School District School Board and the Rockland County School Boards Association. For more information visit www.TomDePrisco.com.
