Pearl River, NY -- (6/18/16) Tom DePrisco, candidate for the 38th Senate District in New York, today released the following statement:
"Although I am appreciative of small steps in the right direction, and having more oversight by the Education Commissioner, I am deeply disturbed how our elected officials in Albany consistently wait until the end of the legislative session each June to act on behalf of the East Ramapo students. They seem very proud of their “compromise” - $3 million for only one year. Last year’s failed proposed legislation would have provided $5 million per year for three years. What happened?
As a veteran school board member, I can state unequivocally that it is impractical and impossible to plan long-term enhanced academic programs without a long-term strategy and without long-term sustainable funding. It has already been established that East Ramapo will need $14 million per year to restore the massive cuts made to public education programs in East Ramapo. A school district needs to know whether their proposed academic programs can be financially supported for many years. This cannot be done with only $3 million for the next school year. This is why I consistently talk about developing a long-term strategy to resolve this problem. "
