Pearl River, NY -- (6/5/16) Tom DePrisco, candidate for the 38th Senate District in New York, today released the following statement:
I am appalled that fire inspectors were denied entry late this week. The bottom line here is the safety of the occupants (children, teachers, and staff) within each building designated for inspection, as well as for emergency service personnel who would respond to an incident there.
New York State Law mandates a fire inspection be performed of all public and private schools at least annually, or at any other time deemed necessary by the Commissioner.
Education Commissioner Elia has asked Rockland County to perform these inspections. Being a long-term Rockland County school board member and retired NYPD Captain, I would never prevent a lawful fire inspection of a school building. I would prefer to learn of a potential hazardous condition during a routine inspection, rather than after a tragedy has occurred.
To ensure that each and every one of the 49 identified schools is in conformance with fire and safety regulations, I certainly expect that the fire inspectors will be able to perform their lawful duties starting this Monday.
