Pearl River, NY -- (7/29/16) Tom DePrisco, candidate for the 38th Senate District in New York, today released the following statement regarding the East Ramapo School District Board of Education "Administrative Error".
"It was announced at the July 26th East Ramapo Board of Education meeting that Sabrina Charles-Pierre would only be able to serve a one-year term as opposed to the two-year term which she was lawfully elected to. Ms. Charles-Pierre was appointed to the school board in October 2015 to fill a vacancy created by a previous board member resignation.
The school board stated that this was a result of an administrative error and that Ms. Charles-Pierre should have been sworn in within 30 days of her election, which occurred on May 17th .
I do not understand how this could possibly happen considering that the East Ramapo Board of Education on two previous occasions properly administered the oath of office to three other board members elected in the same manner. It should be noted that Board President Weissmandl was the recipient of these extraordinary swearing in procedures on two separate occasions: May 20, 2011 and June 2, 2014. Board Vice-President Grossman was sworn in on June 2, 2014 as a result of being elected to his position which he had been previously appointed to as a result of a board resignation. The present Board Clerk administered all of these oaths of office.
This is a disgrace. Sabrina Charles-Pierre deserved better. Our students deserve better.
I will reiterate my belief, with the recommendations by two separate independent monitors, that there is a need for a monitor with veto power. I will fight for a long-term resolution that not only will provide for full restoration and sustainability of public school programs but also to alleviate the financial pressures that exist within this unique school district.
Enough is enough with David Carlucci’s band-aid approaches."
